Two college students, 200 apartments

Matthew Fritzshall and Harrison Cohen began leasing apartments to students at Illinois State University. Two flip phones and their tenacity made up the entire leasing team.

In one year they took occupancy of more than 200 apartments from 30% to 97%, and started a lifetime friendship and an early foundation in commercial real estate.

Learning the business in the Great Recession

After college Matt joined the multifamily brokerage division of one of the top national commercial real estate firms, where he met Edward Liss. Transactions were few and far between. It was a great time to learn the business and live through a down cycle, and their persistence turned them into close friends who closed some of their first deals together.

A blueprint for a new firm

After a few years at a boutique multifamily firm, Matt started the brokerage division of a local Chicago real estate company. It quickly grew to more than 700 units, with Matt on over a dozen of those acquisitions. Ed rejoined him, Matt Buckingham joined shortly after, and the culture they built became the blueprint for a company that reflected how they wanted to do business.

Triton Realty Group is born

Matt and Ed founded Triton. Harrison left his career as a litigation attorney at two major downtown Chicago law firms to build its multifamily brokerage. Summer interns have been part of every year since, a reminder of the college leasing office where it began.
